Rio Hondo Yachts
R io Hondo Yachts is a design firm dedicated to the trailer boater who wants more boat on the water and less hassle off the water. Our motto is “Maximum trailerable boating, minimum hassle”. Our goal is to design boats that are capable and safe on the water, with good performance, and comfortable accommodations. Our challenge is to combine this with true trailer-ability. We want to get you on the water in a great boat with standing headroom, full-size berths, enclosed head, galley, and nav. We want to give you great performance, whether sail or power, and we want to give you great economy of ownership and of operation. Our core values include efficiency and simplicity and we will only add sophistication when we know of no other way to achieve the desired design principle. We design with the amateur builder in mind, offering perhaps the only way for some boaters to get into a more capable boat.
Our first design, the RH40S, a sailboat racer-cruiser, offers the trailer sailor the opportunity to cruise and race big boats anywhere in the country and on a trailer sailor’s budget. This 40-foot boat can be built by amateurs, towed with a normal full-size pick-up truck, stored in a RV space, and launched on most boat ramps.
Our second design, the RH37, is a blue-water cruiser-racer of similar proportions. Like the RH40S, the RH37 is a long, narrow, easily-driven hull. Both are practically and truly trailer-able.
In celebration of the launch of the RH40S prototype,
“Heat Wave”,
we’re having a half-price plans sale!
RH40 Plans: US$500, Full-size Patterns: US$125.
Many designs that are marketed as trailerable require highway permits, professional equipment, and substantial dismantling for over-land transportation. At Rio Hondo we pay close attention to this area from the start to produce a design that can be trailered, launched, and retrieved by the owner without cranes, travel-lifts, tongue extensions, etc.. Our designs will tow and ramp-launch behind full-size pick-up trucks and they will rig easily and quickly.
